Feel a strong urge to write something here..
Life is precious, unpredictable. Somehow, we only think or regret that we didn't do more when the person was around.
Tom's granmother passed away in the middle of the night. His last grandparent. It affected him so much that he couldn't go to work. I have not known Oma 'grandmother in Dutch' for long but she has been part of my life. The days when we visited her in Zeeland, watching her smile, cry, trying her best to walk despite her legs in pain.
We bought her violie, her favourite flowers. She saw it and said 'Prachtig' (wonderful, beautiful) and no more.. We consoled ourselves that we managed to see her one last time on Sunday.
Seeing her in that physical state was very upsetting.. having to go through pain and yet she can't do anything about it. All I know is that she is definitely now in a better place, with Jesus.
Everytime I look at it, I asked myself when will it be my turn to go home for a visit?
I also managed to find accommodation for my two brothers and my niece, Isabelle! (Yes, she will be my ring-bearer!) Found a nice B&B place but still need to confirm availability. Even my mom was interested to stay for 2 nights before moving with us for the rest of her stay here.
I'm also very relieved and happy that Tom's mother has also offered to help us when my family comes!
in Tom's opinion, I look like a terrorist!
Tom steaming the sticky layer of the wallpapers off - sticky work! eeks!
completely dries out your fingers with those glue
Tom removing the wallpapers (which are already off but another layer of the 'stickers' await us! which we used steamers to remove).
Jaap and Jos helping us with filling holes, enormous amounts of them!
(same view as the above pic but now covering holes)
view of the kitchen wall with marks of the holes filled.
even after we used latex over it, there were more holes uncovered! Imagine the frustration that we all had.
Tom and I are proud to share that we have accomplished alot, holes on the kitchen walls, hallway are done.
Suet Ching, my colleague (whose parents migrated from Hong Kong to the Netherlands), had passed me 2 rice dumplings few weeks ago. I kept them nice and 'fresh' in the freezer. I steamed them today to reward ourselves after a hard day at work in the new apartment.
There's actually a story behind the rice dumpling which you can read here.. One of my favourite stories during my childhood days which I still remember fondly of (though not of a happy ending).
I didn't open the bag that SC gave me and thought it's 3D-rectangular shape but it isn't!
(supposedly to be with mushrooms too but none!)
Wanted to make this fried toufu dish with minced meat, mushrooms, spring onions and dark soya sauce.. sounds delicious right? but the tofu I bought turned sour.. ughs..
Hence, I have to come up with something else! Instead of minced meat, I used soya minced meat to fry with beans and mushrooms. It looked like minced meat but Tom isn't easily fooled.. ;) He hates soya and can tell the difference.. Oh well but at least he still finished half!
Personally, I quite like the toufu except maybe needs to add more taste?
I also like the chinese mushrooms that my mother sent to me.. very yummy!
Well, I kinda expected Tom's reaction so I also baked chicken (with Lee Kum Kee char siew sauce). Never fails to satisfy us!
but the picture just refuses to show!
It's been quite awhile since I wrote online.. so to start myself writing again, food is my motivation!
I tried baked chicken rice. I didn't follow the sequence this time because I didn't exactly read the instructions properly. However, still turn out quite well. Thank God for that! I also added red, green and yellow bell peppers though I forgotten mushrooms! It's ok I guess since I spread mushroom soup over the rice mixture before sprinkling it with grated cheese. Just in case my friends in Singapore may be wondering, the cheese was bought pre-grated! I didn't do it myself.
It's my mother's birthday today but I didn't call her :(
Too caught up with work. It's really busy today.., still not a good excuse..
Sigh.. will call her the next morning!
Got the recipe from one of the users in Facebook. She cooks great stuffs. I think the orignal omurice is to the rice being wrapped around with an omelette. I honestly don't know how to wrap the rice without breaking the omelette. Besides, I always can't flip it right without breaking it. So, yes, I really like this way of making omurice :p
It's really easy to make.. done within 15mins! Delicious too! The tomatoe ketchup (Heinz!) with thyme and egg... taste really good!
I'm so excited and happy to be receiving this lovely package from Ming Huey! It's a good thing that she has warned me beforehand that it will take 1-2mths to arrive.. My wait is finally over, only one month's wait!
It's quite fun doing it!
Mee Rebus is one of my most missed food!!

with a fried egg underneath
Today is 2nd Easter day, which is a holiday in the Netherlands.
Both Tom and I love to eat this.
One of our favourite snacks. The char siew bao (or pork bun) is really good. Nice and soft skin.
The Siew Mai (or chicken snack) is supposedly to be good too the other time we tried it, but this time it was a rip-off!
Doesn't taste one bit like siew mai! :( *economy down-turn = less quality*
